OLLY MURPHY

We recently caught up with rookie trainer Olly Murphy , who is formly Gordon Elliotts Assistant trainer.

Tell us about yourself?

OLLY I rode 24 winners p2p and 6 on the track before getting to heavy to be a jockey. Spent, 18 months working for Alan king, and 2 seasons for chris Bealby and a couple of summers working for Brian Meehan. I then spent 4 years as assistant to Gordon elliott before returning home to Warwickshire to train myself on May 1st.

Was the horse racing industry always the line you wanted to work at?

OLLY I had trials for Coventry city football club at 15. I was mad on football but racing always came first. I’m a big lad so riding was never going to be a career I could go down

What was it like working for Gordon Elliott?

OLLY I had the best 4 years of my life with Gordon. He was fantastic to me, I learned more then in 4 years than I have for the rest of my life. Work was work and play was play. I was involved with some fantastic horses while I was there. It was magic. It was also a lot harder to leave than people would imagine. It’s a place close to my heart and I still speak to Gordon every day. I met some of my best friends out there and myself Gordon and a few of the lads are going to get away for a few days before everyone gets busy for the winter.

Tell us about your own stable?

I’ve 18 horses in and about the same to bring in for the winter. A number that is larger than I thought as I’m only 3 weeks in to having a Licence. There will be a big turn around of horses come the end of the summer with a lot of these summer handicappers going to the sales

Im 95% a jumps trainer but I have a couple of flat horses. I don’t mind training anything but my heart is set jumping

Give us a horse to watch out for?

OLLY: A horse to watch out for this summer is a horse called cliffside park and a horse to watch out for in the winter months is a horse called mon port. A very impressive winner of a bumper on his Last start.

How to you unwind from racing?

OLLY I’m a massive Aston Villa fan so love to switch off by going and watching them play. I managed to get over 15 times from Ireland last year so il he going plenty this year when I can as well, as there only 20 minutes down the road from me!
