Welsh born jockey David Probert unfrequently makes any mainstream headlines however to the jockey’s credit he is more than capable of success at any given opportunity.

Back in 2006 Probert completed a nine-week course at the British Racing School in Newmarket, he joined the Kingsclere yard of accomplished trainer Andrew Balding.

He has been there ever since, and in 2008 shared the apprentice jockey championship with another Balding protégé, William Buick, who recently won the Derby.

At the Races Presenter Matt Chapman interviewed the rider on Monday evening at Windsor, pointing out to Probert that he was a top class jockey, though he doesn’t put himself out there enough.

That was a seriously valid point, as Probert unquestionably has the credentials to be a champion jockey but appears to be happy just taking things day by day, which isn’t always the correct way forward for his career, as jockeys often work on the basis of “If you’re not winning, you’re not in the frame for bigger rides”.

Probert has yet to win a Group 1 race but has twice won the Group 2 Oettingen-Rennen at Baden-Baden in Germany and in 2014 took part in the Investec Derby for the first time, finishing eleventh on Impulsive Moment.

Most recently he expertly piloted 50/1 shot Tip Two Win to a credible second place finish in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas behind Saxon Warrior. Tip Two Win goes to Royal Ascot next week with a live chance of success with Probert likely to be in the saddle.

“Invisibility can be good as a superpower. But psychiatry reveals people don’t like it very much.”, that same comparable meaning can be used for Probert, he has the talent to go all the way to the top, but he just needs to push himself out there more and get noticed by other trainers and owners.
