The whole sport was left in shock on Sunday as 16/1 shot Waldgeist stormed to victory in the Arc – Writes Ryan Sharkey
All the hype for this year’s Arc was for a certain Enable the golden girl history was written before the race had even started Enable was going to do something no other horse had ever done before win 3 Arcs.
Waldgeist was trained by Andre Fabre who didn’t want to “shoot Bambi” he explained prior to the race speaking about Enable to the ITV racing team.
Having found himself short of room and having to switch to the outside about 350m away from home, Pierre-Charles Boudot had given a horse who savoured the ground the absolute perfect ride. Waldgeist stayed the best and finished strongly to catch and pass the almost unbeatable Enable. Waldgeist won a supposedly one-horse race beating Enable.
This result has reverberated around the racing world and the breeders’ cup turf looks set to be the next stop for Waldgeist where he will face Enable yet again. Will the result be the same next time or will Enable get her revenge?
