Placed twice in Group one sprints in the last few weeks, there is nothing Sceptical about the talents of this James McAuley owned speedball.

Bought from the sales for £2,800 – this son of Exceed and Excel out of Jealous Again initially was under the ownership of Godolphin, although he never made it out of their pre-training yard for whatever reason they had.

Sceptical already looks like the bargain of all time, having won four races in a row, and backing up that with two recent 2nd placed efforts in Group one company – he has already recouped his humble acquisition price 15 times over and he still appears open to more progression.

James McAuley, a 39-year-old from Dublin, is the registered as the owner but he shares the expenditure, with his brother, Stephen, and his hotelier uncle, Jim Gough.

3Furlongsout.com spoke to James McAuley about their next move with the sprinter that keeps on giving; he said “We have been delighted with Sceptical since Newmarket. Although he wasn’t unlucky in the race, I feel we probably tracked the wrong horses through the race.

He then added; “He beat the horses that Frankie Dettori considered were the main dangers. His next run will be in the Group 3 Phoenix Stakes over 6f at the Curragh and Joey Sheridan will get the ride again and If all goes well, we will then travel to the Nunthorpe to take on Battaash over 5f – we don’t fear any one horse”.

When asked about Sceptical main aim for the remainder of the season, McAuley quickly responded; “it is all about The Flying Five at the Curragh for us”.
