At time when most schoolboys are enjoying the summer holidays, perhaps sunning themselves on a beach, 11-year-old Jack Lander decided to do something a bit different: walk 160 miles for The injured jockey fund in eight-day’s , We caught up with Jack Lander.

Tell us about your self and your achievements ?

I’m Jack Lander 11 years old, I’m just about to start big school in September. I love horse racing and riding my ponies. My achievements have to be raising so much money to help people in racing and also having my book published after my Stratford to Oaksey House walk.

How did you get interested in racing?

Mom and dad took me to see Frankel win the 2000 guineas after that I wanted to be a Jockey, I kept asking and asking to learn to ride and in the end I started having riding lessons and that’s when it all began.

How did the walk idea come about?

After a couple of falls from my first pony river I realised what Jockeys put themselves through ever time they go out and race that’s why I chose the Injured Jockeys Fund for my first walk from Stratford Racecourse to Oaksey house, and the walk I’ve just finished I did for the Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare, because I learnt about Racing Welfare after I did some walking with Richard Farquhar from Walking the Courses and my sister had start working in racing at Dan Skelton’s yard.

How much have you raised to date?

So far I have raised over £7 thousand pounds for Racing Welfare, and including my last walk and the one I’ve just finished I have raised over £20 thousand for the Injured Jockeys Fund

Aims for the future?

To be a jump jockey and hope to be one of the youngest jockeys to ride in the Grand National.

What’s next on the charity front for you?

I really want to climb Kilimanjaro in the summer of 2019 for the Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare I would like to take 20-30 people with me from the racing industry I have already got 11 people to come with me including 2 jockeys, people from Racing Welfare, and a doctor. If you know anyone who wants to come along they can email me about it.

Hobbies outside racing?

Show jumping and cross-country on my ponies and my Xbox when i have a chance.
