September and October have had a huge amount of top class horse racing.

From Harry Angel ploughing through the Haydock mud to land the Sprint Cup,Capri landing the St Leger,Enable showing real class and beauty to land the Arc and not forgetting all the thrill of the finale at Champions Day at Ascot.

Throughout all of that their have been three races that caught the attentions of racing fans, races that have brought back memories and for many rekindled why they got into racing in the first place, I am talking about “Legends Races”.

Doncaster’s St Leger meeting has in recent years on its opening day held a race for jockeys of yesteryear over the straight mile and for many ex jocks it’s a chance to relive the old days and show that the old magic is still their and for many in the saddle this proves to be true for a few and not so for many.

This week upon typing this we have had two more,Chepstow held one which was taken by Denman’s old sparring partner Sam Thomas and on Thursday just gone Norman Williamson teamed up to steer Pallisator to his first win since joining Gordon Elliot’s team in Ireland when landing a charity race at Punchestown.

Now maybe their is a gap in the market here, why hasn’t racing got a “Legends Series” ?

People love these races and it creates something different for the sport, many sports have events for older competitors like athletics, football and golf so why not racing.

Take Epsom for example, now they have many other “Derby” races in the season for Lady Riders,Gentlemen Amateurs,Apprentices and even Jump Jockeys so why not one for Legends too? I’m sure many would love to see former flat and jump rides do battle over the full Derby course and distance and treat us to a display of their old riding skills.

Hopefully someone with more authority than me in racing, I’m sure the person who orders the stationary at the BHA will do and get one of the main people to look into setting something up for a year long series, say 8-10 races at some of the most famous courses in the country on the flat between 1m and 2m so the racing public and the former stars of the weighing room can have a bit of fun and treat us to a trip back in time.
